Some Intel CPUs use an 'FSP' binary blob which provides an inflexible
means of starting up the CPU. One result is that microcode updates can only
be done before RAM is available and therefore parsing of the device tree
is impracticle.
Worse, the addess of the microcode update must be stored in ROM since a
pointer to its start address and size is passed to the 'FSP' blob. It is
not possible to perform any calculations to obtain the address and size.
To work around this, ifdtool is enhanced to work out the address and size of
the first microcode update it finds in the supplied device tree. It then
writes these into the correct place in the ROM. U-Boot can then start up
the FSP correctly.

Newer Intel chips require a Management Engine which requires a particular
format for the SPI flash that contains the boot loader. Add a tool that
supports creating and modifying these ROM images.
This tool is from Chrome OS but has been cleaned up to use U-Boot style
and to add comments. A few features have been added also.

Since Linux 3.15, relative path feature and related fixes,

Like many platforms, the Altera socfpga platform requires that the
preloader be "signed" in a certain way or the built-in boot ROM will
not boot the code.
This change automatically creates an appropriately signed preloader
from an SPL image.
The signed image includes a CRC which must, of course, be generated
with a CRC generator that the SoCFPGA boot ROM agrees with otherwise
the boot ROM will reject the image.
Unfortunately the CRC used in this boot ROM is not the same as the
Adler CRC in lib/crc32.c. Indeed the Adler code is not technically a
CRC but is more correctly described as a checksum.
Thus, the appropriate CRC generator is added to lib/ as crc32_alt.c.

This commit enables Kconfig.
Going forward, we use Kconfig for the board configuration.
mkconfig will never be used. Nor will include/config.mk be generated.
Kconfig must be adjusted for U-Boot because our situation is
a little more complicated than Linux Kernel.
We have to generate multiple boot images (Normal, SPL, TPL)
from one source tree.
Each image needs its own configuration input.
Usage:
Run "make <board>_defconfig" to do the board configuration.
It will create the .config file and additionally spl/.config, tpl/.config
if SPL, TPL is enabled, respectively.
You can use "make config", "make menuconfig" etc. to create
a new .config or modify the existing one.
Use "make spl/config", "make spl/menuconfig" etc. for spl/.config
and do likewise for tpl/.config file.
The generic syntax of configuration targets for SPL, TPL is:
<target_image>/<config_command>
Here, <target_image> is either 'spl' or 'tpl'
<config_command> is 'config', 'menuconfig', 'xconfig', etc.
When the configuration is done, run "make".
(Or "make <board>_defconfig all" will do the configuration and build
in one time.)
For futher information of how Kconfig works in U-Boot,
please read the comment block of scripts/multiconfig.py.
By the way, there is another item worth remarking here:
coexistence of Kconfig and board herder files.
Prior to Kconfig, we used C headers to define a set of configs.
We expect a very long term to migrate from C headers to Kconfig.
Two different infractructure must coexist in the interim.
In our former configuration scheme, include/autoconf.mk was generated
for use in makefiles.
It is still generated under include/, spl/include/, tpl/include/ directory
for the Normal, SPL, TPL image, respectively.

move fdtdec_get_int() out of lib/fdtdec.c into lib/fdtdec_common.c
as this function is also used, if CONFIG_OF_CONTROL is not
used. Poped up on the ids8313 board using signed FIT images,
and activating CONFIG_SYS_GENERIC_BOARD. Without this patch
it shows on boot:
No valid FDT found - please append one to U-Boot binary, use u-boot-dtb.bin or define CONFIG_OF_EMBED. For sandbox, use -d <file.dtb>
With this patch, it boots again with CONFIG_SYS_GENERIC_BOARD
enabled.

unconditionally forced the sha256.h from u-boot to be used
for tools instead of the host version. This is fragile though
as it will also include the host version. Therefore move it

"SFX = .exe" was originally added for Cygwin environment.
It is true that GCC on Cygwin spits executables with .exe extention.
For example,
gcc -o foo foo.c
will generate "foo.exe", not "foo".
But GNU make is also nicely adjusted for Cygwin.
For example,
foo: foo.c
gcc -o $@ $<
will compare the timestamp between "foo.exe" and "foo.c".
You do not have to tweak Makefiles like this:
foo$(SFX): foo.c
gcc -o $@ $<
And "make clean" works as well without adjustment for Cygwin because
the command "rm foo" on Cygwin will delete both "foo" and "foo.exe".
In conclusion, makefiles do not need special care for Cygwin.

There are many source files shared between U-boot image and tools.
Instead of adding a lot of dummy wrapper files that just include
the corresponding file in lib/ or common/ directory,
Makefile should automatically generate them.
The original inspiration for this came from
scripts/Makefile.asm-generic of Linux Kernel.

When building tools the u-boot specific sha256.h is required, but the
host version of sha256.h is used when present. This leads to build errors
on FreeBSD which does have a system sha256.h include. Like libfdt_env.h
explicitly include u-boot's sha256.h.

The new atmelimage converts a machine code BLOB to bootable ROM image. Atmel
ROM has no sophisticated image format, it only checks the first 7 ARM vectors.
The vectors can contain valid B or LDR opcodes, the 6'th vector contains the
image size to load.
Additionally the PMECC header can be written by the atmelimage target. The
parameters must be given via the -n switch as a coma separated list. For
example:
mkimage -T atmelimage \
-n usePmecc=1,sectorPerPage=4,sectorSize=512,spareSize=64,eccBits=4,eccOffset=36 \
-d spl/u-boot-spl.bin boot.bin
A provided image can be checked for correct header setup. It prints out the
PMECC header parameters if it has one and the 6'th interrupt vector content.

Prior to Kbuild, $(TOPDIR) or $(SRCTREE) was used for
pointing to the top of source directory.
(No difference between the two.)
In Kbuild style, $(srctree) is used for instead.
This commit renames SRCTREE to srctree and deletes the
defition of SRCTREE.
Note that SRCTREE in scripts/kernel-doc, scripts/docproc.c,
doc/DocBook/Makefile should be keep.

Programs in tools/ directory are usually built for the host.
But some of them (mkimage, dumpimge, gen_eth_addr, etc.) are
useful on the target OS too.
Actually, prior to Kbuild, U-Boot could build tools for
the target like follows:
$ make <target_board>_config
$ export CROSS_COMPILE=<cross_gcc_prefix>
$ make HOSTCC=${CROSS_COMPILE}gcc HOSTSTRIP=${CROSS_COMPILE}strip tools
In Kbuild, we can no longer replace HOSTCC at the command line.
In order to get back that feature, this commit adds "cross-tools" target.
Usage:
Build tools for the host
$ make CROSS_COMPILE=<cross_gcc_prefix> tools
Build tools for the target
$ make CROSS_COMPILE=<cross_gcc_prefix> cross_tools
Besides, "make cross_tools" strip tools programs because we
generally expect smaller storages on embedded systems.

Now we are ready to switch over to real Kbuild.
This commit disables temporary scripts:
scripts/{Makefile.build.tmp, Makefile.host.tmp}
and enables real Kbuild scripts:
scripts/{Makefile.build,Makefile.host,Makefile.lib}.
This switch is triggered by the line in scripts/Kbuild.include

We need to adjust some build scripts for U-Boot.
But smaller amount of modification is preferable.

locally added or removed.
In Kbuild, it is not allowed to change CFLAGS locally.
Instead, ccflags-y, asflags-y, cppflags-y,
CFLAGS_$(basetarget).o, CFLAGS_REMOVE_$(basetarget).o
are prepared for that purpose.

This commit changes the working directory
where the build process occurs.
Before this commit, build process occurred under the source
tree for both in-tree and out-of-tree build.
That's why we needed to add $(obj) prefix to all generated
files in makefiles like follows:
$(obj)u-boot.bin: $(obj)u-boot
Here, $(obj) is empty for in-tree build, whereas it points
to the output directory for out-of-tree build.
And our old build system changes the current working directory
with "make -C <sub-dir>" syntax when descending into the
sub-directories.
On the other hand, Kbuild uses a different idea
to handle out-of-tree build and directory descending.
The build process of Kbuild always occurs under the output tree.
When "O=dir/to/store/output/files" is given, the build system
changes the current working directory to that directory and
restarts the make.
Kbuild uses "make -f $(srctree)/scripts/Makefile.build obj=<sub-dir>"
syntax for descending into sub-directories.
(We can write it like "make $(obj)=<sub-dir>" with a shorthand.)
This means the current working directory is always the top
of the output directory.

ARM64 uses the newer RELA-style relocations rather than the older REL.
RELA relocations have an addend in the relocation struct, rather than
expecting the loader to read a value from the location to be updated.
While this is beneficial for ordinary program loading, it's problematic
for U-Boot because the location to be updated starts out with zero,
rather than a pre-relocation value. Since we need to be able to run C
code before relocation, we need a tool to apply the relocations at
build time.
In theory this tool is applicable to other newer architectures (mainly
64-bit), but currently the only relocations it supports are for arm64,
and it assumes a 64-bit little-endian target. If the latter limitation
is ever to be changed, we'll need a way to tell the tool what format
the image is in. Eventually this may be replaced by a tool that uses
libelf or similar and operates directly on the ELF file. I've written
some code for such an approach but libelf does not make it easy to poke
addresses by memory address (rather than by section), and I was
hesitant to write code to manually parse the program headers and do the
update outside of libelf (or to iterate over sections) -- especially
since it wouldn't get test coverage on things like binaries with
multiple PT_LOAD segments. This should be good enough for now to let
the manual relocation stuff be removed from the arm64 patches.

It is possible to perform the innverse operation -- extracting any file from
the image -- by using the dumpimage's -i option:
$ dumpimage -i multi.img -p 2 System.map
Although it's feasible to retrieve "data files" from image through scripting,
the requirement to embed tools such 'dd', 'awk' and 'sed' for this sole purpose
is cumbersome and unreliable -- once you must keep track of file sizes inside
the image. Furthermore, extracting data files using "dumpimage" tool is faster
than through scripting.

In order to avoid duplicating code and keep only one point of modification,
the functions, structs and defines useful for "dumpimage" were moved from
"mkimage" to a common module called "imagetool".
This modification also weakens the coupling between image types (FIT, IMX, MXS,
and so on) and image tools (mkimage and dumpimage). Any tool may initialize the
"imagetool" through register_image_tool() function, while the image types
register themselves within an image tool using the register_image_type()
function:

Add mkimage support for generating and verifying MXS bootstream.
The implementation here is mostly a glue code between MXSSB v0.4
and mkimage, but the long-term goal is to rectify this and merge
MXSSB with mkimage more tightly. Once this code is properly in
U-Boot, MXSSB shall be deprecated in favor of mkimage-mxsimage
support.
Note that the mxsimage generator needs libcrypto from OpenSSL, I
therefore enabled the libcrypto/libssl unconditionally.

Commit 669dfc2e adds libfdt_env.h to HOSTCPPFLAGS. It causes stdio.h
to be included before _GNU_SOURCE is defined in C files. On some old hosts
some prototypes are protected by #ifdef __USE_GNU, which is set when
_GNU_SOURCE is defined.

At present mkimage is set up to always build with image signing support.
This means that the SSL libraries (e.g. libssl-dev) are always required.
Adjust things so that mkimage can be built with and without image signing,
controlled by the presence of CONFIG_FIT_SIGNATURE in the board config file.
If CONFIG_FIT_SIGNATURE is not enabled, then mkimage will report a warning
that signing is not supported. If the option is enabled, but libraries are
not available, then a build error similar to this will be shown:
lib/rsa/rsa-sign.c:26:25: fatal error: openssl/rsa.h: No such file or directory

RSA provides a public key encryption facility which is ideal for image
signing and verification.
Images are signed using a private key by mkimage. Then at run-time, the
images are verified using a private key.
This implementation uses openssl for the host part (mkimage). To avoid
bringing large libraries into the U-Boot binary, the RSA public key
is encoded using a simple numeric representation in the device tree.

The boot logo matching is now done in following way:
- use LOGO_BMP if it is set, or
- use $(BOARD).bmp if it exists in tools/logos, or
- use $(VENDOR).bmp if it exists in tools/logos, or
- use denx.bmp otherwise.

When building host utilities, we include libfdt.h from the host, not from
U-Boot. This in turn brings in libfdt_env.h from the host, which can mess
up the types and cause a build failure, depending on the host environment.
To fix this, force inclusion of U-Boot's libfdt_env.h so that the types
are correct.
Another way to fix this is to use -nostdinc and -idirafter to ensure that
system includes are included after U-Boot ones. Unfortunately this means
that U-Boot's errno.h gets included instead of the system one. This in
turn requires a hack to errno.h to redirect things, so all in all the
solution in this patch is probably cleaner.

Pull slightly modified version of Documentation/DocBook, the related perl
script scripts/kernel-doc and the scripts/docproc.c from Linux kernel and
implant it into U-Boot. This will allow smooth generation of kerneldoc
style documentation.
It was necessary to modify the DocBook/Makefile to work with U-Boot build
system. The changes were only minor though and involved replacing the kbuild
specific parts.
It was also necessary to replace use of variables like KERNEL_VERSION with
U_BOOT_VERSION, strings like Linux kernel with U-Boot Bootloader etc. so
the generated result actually matches.
Finally, it was necessary to adjust docproc.c, since the documentation in
U-Boot is located in doc/DocBook instead of Documentation/DocBook as is in
case of the Linux kernel.
Some parts of the DocBook Makefile are unused, but to allow easier sync with
Linux kernel, these parts are still left in. The targets enabled now are
"htmldocs" "pdfdocs" "psdocs" "xmldocs" and "cleandocs" to remove the results
of documentation build.

Provides a tool to build boot Image for PBL(Pre boot loader) which is
used on Freescale CoreNet SoCs, PBL can be used to load some instructions
and/or data for pre-initialization. The default output image is u-boot.pbl,
for more details please refer to doc/README.pblimage.

The generated header bmp_logo.h is useful even outside common/lcd.c for
the logo dimension. However, the problem is, the generated bmp_logo.h
cannot be included multiple times because bmp_logo_palette[] and
bmp_logo_bitmap[] are defined in the bmp_logo.h.
This patch fixes this by defining these arrays in another header
bmp_logo_data.h and in bmp_logo.h only declaring these arrays.

The INCA-IP SoC belongs to the Lantiq XWAY SoC product portfolio.
For the upcoming support of other Lantiq SoC devices this tool should
not solely depend on the INCA-IP board.
Rename the tool to xway-swap-bytes and add an config option
to enable compilation optionally.

i might be thinking of a different env_embedded situation. a different
problem with your patch to tools/Makefile: you copied the same logic multiple
times which means more bitrot.
why dont you do something like:

The change is currently needed to be able to remove the board
configuration scripting from the top level Makefile and replace it by
a simple, table driven script.
Moving this configuration setting into the "CONFIG_*" name space is
also desirable because it is needed if we ever should move forward to
a Kconfig driven configuration system.

The current libfdt object rules hard depend implicitly on the .depend file
being correct. If it isn't, then it is unable to properly compile the
objects. Give it a full path like all the other implicit rules here so it
will always work in face of .depend issues.

This patch adds support for "imximage" (MX Boot Image)
to the mkimage utility. The imximage is used on the Freescales's
MX.25, MX.35 and MX.51 processors.

It's useful to be able to build up the host tools without having to select
a board first. Pretty much all tools in there are config-independent
anyways.
Also add a shortcut "tools-all" to quickly build all host tools that are
actually config-independent to allow for simple test builds.

Currently, some of the tools instead set CC to be HOSTCC in order to re-use
some pattern rules -- but this fails when the user overrides CC on the make
command line. Also, the HOSTCFLAGS in tools/Makefile are currently not
being used because config.mk overwrites them.
This patch adds static pattern rules for files that have been requested to
be built with the native compiler using $(HOSTSRCS) and $(HOSTOBJS), and
converts the tools to use them.
It restores easylogo to using the host compiler, which was broken by commit
38d299c2db (if this was an intentional change,
please let me know -- but it seems to be a build tool).
It restores -pedantic and the special flags for darwin and cygwin that were
requested in tools/makefile (but keeps the flags added by config.mk) --
hopefully someone can test this on those platforms. It no longer
conditionalizes -pedantic on not being darwin; it wasn't clear that that was
intentional, and unless there's a real problem it's just inviting people to
contribute non-pedantic patches to those files (I'm not a fan of -pedantic
personally, but if it's on for one platform it should be on for all).
HOST_LDFLAGS is renamed HOSTLDFLAGS for consistency with the previous
HOST_CFLAGS to HOSTCFLAGS rename. A new HOSTCFLAGS_NOPED is made available
for those files which currently cannot be built with -pedantic, and replaces
the old FIT_CFLAGS.
imls now uses the cross compiler properly, rather than by trying to
reconstruct CC using the typoed $(CROSS_COMPILER).
envcrc.c is now dependency-processed unconditionally -- previously it would
be built without being on (HOST)SRCS if CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED was not
selected.

The env code is protected by the ENV_IS_EMBEDDED define, so attempting to
compile the code when this isn't defined is pointless. Now that the env
headers have unified around CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED, convert the build
system to only build the env objects when this is enabled. And now that
the env code is conditionally compiled, we can drop the source code checks.
For people who want to extract the environment manually, add a new option
CONFIG_BUILD_ENVCRC that only enables the envcrc utility.

This is a first step towards reorganizing the mkimage code to make it
easier to add support for additional images types. Current mkimage
code is specific to generating uImage and FIT image files, but the
same framework can be used to generate other image types like
Kirkwood boot images (kwbimage-TBD). For this, the mkimage code gets
reworked:
Here is the brief plan for the same:-
a) Split mkimage code into core and image specific support
b) Implement callback functions for image specific code
c) Move image type specific code to respective C files
Currently there are two types of file generation/list
supported (i.e uImage, FIT), the code is abstracted from
mkimage.c/.h and put in default_image.c and fit_image.c;
all code in these file is static except init function call
d) mkimage_register API is added to add new image type support
All above is addressed in this patch
e) Add kwbimage type support to this new framework (TBD)
This will be implemented in a following commit.

Since commit a706bfc7 common/env_embedded.o and tools/envcrc were
only built when CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED was set, but this breaks
building for many boards.
We always have to build these files when CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_FLASH is
set.

Add support for compiling the host tools in the tools directory using
the MinGW toolchain. This produces executables which can be used on
standard Windows computers without requiring cygwin.
One must specify the MinGW compiler and strip utilities as if they
were the host toolchain in order to build win32 executables, eg:
make HOSTCC=i586-mingw32msvc-gcc HOSTSTRIP=i586-mingw32msvc-strip tools

crc32.c uses the zlib.h header in include/u-boot/zlib.h. The symlink
was previously necessary to give U-Boot's version of zlib.h precedence
over the host computer's version of zlib.h.

Split variable declarations into multiple lines and use the standard
VAR-y convention. Also move object and binary variable declarations to
after config.mk has been included to allow for these lists to utilize
the CONFIG_XXX variables.
These changes lay the groundwork for conditional compilation of files
in the tools directory.

The 'license' command includes the U-Boot license (GPLv2) into the
actual bootloader binary. The license text can be shown interactively
at the U-Boot commandline.
For products where the commandline can actually be accessed by the
end user, this helps to prevent inadvertent GPL violations, since the
GPLv2 license text can no longer be 'forgotten' to be included into
the product.
The 'license' command can be enabled by CONFIG_CMD_LICENSE.

This commit gets rid of a huge amount of silly white-space issues.
Especially, all sequences of SPACEs followed by TAB characters get
removed (unless they appear in print statements).
Also remove all embedded "vim:" and "vi:" statements which hide
indentation problems.

The envcrc.c does sizeof(unsigned long) when calculating the crc, but
this is done with the build toolchain instead of the target tool
chain, so if the build is a 64bit system but the target is 32bits,
the size will obviously be wrong. This converts all unsigned long
stuff related to crc32 to uint32_t types. Compile tested only: output
of ./tools/envcrc when run on a 32bit build system matches that of a
64bit build system.

This patch allows u-boot to build without error in a cygwin
environment. Cygwin does not define __u64 in it's
include/asm/types.h file. The -idirafter flag in the u-boot
build causes the inclusion of the cygwin types.h file as opposed
to u-bot/include/asm/types.h file which does define __u64.
Subsequently, sha1.c compile fails due to unknown symbol.

Modifications are based on the linux kernel approach and
support two use cases:
1) Add O= to the make command line
'make O=/tmp/build all'
2) Set environement variable BUILD_DIR to point to the desired location
'export BUILD_DIR=/tmp/build'
'make'
The second approach can also be used with a MAKEALL script
'export BUILD_DIR=/tmp/build'
'./MAKEALL'
Command line 'O=' setting overrides BUILD_DIR environent variable.
When none of the above methods is used the local build is performed and
the object files are placed in the source directory.
